Shield Designs
Both Shields are real. You can put your hands on them.
The Utrecht Shield was finished in June 2022. I carried the completed wood base over to Utrecht in the Netherlands for the 40th anniversary of the 1982 match, which is where it all started for the women's game.
The Raeburn Shield was made in January 2026 and went straight into service. Its first outing was round one of the 2026 Six Nations, England defending it at Twickenham against Wales. The following week it was at Murrayfield, where Scotland took it off them.
The wood tells you where each one came from.
The Utrecht Shield is French oak. France won that first women's international in 1982, so the wood is theirs, and the name belongs to the Netherlands and the city the match was played in.
The Raeburn Shield is English oak, for the England side that played in 1871. The name comes from Raeburn Place in Edinburgh, so that one is Scotland's. Both Shields carry both teams from the day they started.
What is still to do.
The metal is not on them yet. Silver and engraving across the front is a serious piece of fundraising and it is the next big job. For now stickers do the work, and they do it well. Everybody who sees the Shields in person says the same thing, which is that they are more impressive than they expected. Once the silver is on, they will be something else again.
Shield Bearers are engraved on the back. That is what pays for the wood, the travel and everything else.
